Are you planning to buy a VPN? You are probably weighing between options since many VPN providers make tall claims about their products and services. CyberGhost VPN is a well-known VPN provider that claims to offer privacy, security, speed, compatibility, and access to geo-restricted streaming services.

VPN users want to protect their privacy while browsing the Internet. They also want to secure their sensitive information online. Many VPN users want to access geo-restricted streaming services like Netflix, while many want to access P2P/torrenting services. Most VPN users value speed, customer service, and reasonable price too. We have evaluated CyberGhost VPN against these criteria.

Does CyberGhost VPN meet your requirements and should you buy it? Read this review to find that out.

Is your privacy safe with CyberGhost?

Most VPN users accord a high priority to privacy. A VPN that implements a “no logs” policy can guarantee privacy and we are happy to see that CyberGhost VPN does that. In addition to hiding your IP address, CyberGhost VPN rigorously follows its “no logs” policy. The company describes on its "Privacy Policy" page that it doesn’t log any of the following:

·  Your browsing history;
·  Your Internet traffic destination;
·  The data content of your Internet traffic;
·  Your search preferences;
·  Your connection history including IP address, connection timestamp, and session duration.

CyberGhost VPN makes it clear that it doesn’t have access to your credit card information. It also declares that it can’t connect your payment or other identifiable information to your online activities using the CyberGhost VPN software.

CyberGhost VPN collects the following personal information when you buy its products and services:

·  Your name;
·  Your address;
·  Your email address;
·  Your payment information.

The company collects this information to register your account and provide customer support to you.

CyberGhost VPN also collects the following personal information of its customers as part of its fraud detection measures:

·  Website usage information including your anonymized IP address;

·  Transaction information, e.g., billing method, canceled orders, chargeback requests, etc.

The company doesn’t associate this information with any Internet activities of its users through the CyberGhost VPN software.

This VPN provider collects some non-personal information when you visit its website, however, this is anonymized information. Some examples of this data are the following:

·  The browser you use;

·  The type of device you use, e.g., mobile, desktop, etc.;

·  Your mobile service provider.

This amount of personal and non-personal information collection is pretty standard, and we find no privacy risks with this.

CyberGhost VPN collects your personal information using forms like the registration form on its website. To collect non-personal anonymized data, CyberGhost VPN uses 3rd party services like Google Analytics.

This VPN provider doesn’t sell, rent, or trade your personal information. It shares your personal information with some 3rd party providers, and CyberGhost VPN lists them explicitly on their privacy policy. The following are a few examples of these 3rd party providers:

·  Cleverbridge, Stripe, and PayPal for payment processing;

·  Zendesk for online chat support.

These 3rd party providers can’t sell or rent your personal information either. CyberGhost VPN secures all personal information it collects about you and processes them per applicable laws.

The jurisdiction of CyberGhost VPN is the UK. Privacy enthusiasts will not consider this country as the ideal jurisdiction for a privacy-focused VPN since it’s part of the “14 Eyes” coalition of countries that conduct mass surveillance. However, CyberGhost VPN has an effective “no logs” policy. We find no concerns with the jurisdiction of this company.

CyberGhost VPN has been operating since 2011. The company has consistently published transparency reports showing the number of requests for information it has received from 3rd parties and law enforcement agencies. Since CyberGhost VPN doesn’t keep any logs of the online activities of its users, it doesn’t honor these requests.

We are happy with the track record of CyberGhost VPN to protect the privacy of its users. This VPN has implemented an excellent “no logs” policy.

How secure is CyberGhost VPN?

Most VPN users prioritize security, and you probably do that too. VPNs that support secure protocols and robust encryption can offer great security, and CyberGhost VPN does that.

It supports OpenVPN, which is the most secure VPN protocol. This VPN protocol doesn’t have any known security vulnerabilities. CyberGhost VPN also supports IKEv2 and L2TP protocols, and these are secure VPN protocols too.

This VPN supports the WireGuard protocol. It’s still under development, however, its advanced cryptography promises to make it a highly secure and fast protocol. You can use it on an experimental basis.

A robust encryption matters when you choose a VPN. CyberGhost VPN uses AES-256 encryption, which is the strongest in the market.

Thanks to its robust security solutions, CyberGhost VPN prevents all IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. This VPN also offers ad and malware blockers.

CyberGhost VPN has an “Automated HTTPS Redirect” feature. This solution forces you to connect to the most secure version of all websites that you access, therefore, you won’t inadvertently visit unsafe websites.

CyberGhost VPN offers a “kill switch” feature. Even if your VPN connection drops unexpectedly, your sensitive information remains safe due to this feature. The “kill switch” automatically blocks your Internet connection if the VPN drops suddenly.

CyberGhost VPN offers a few add-on security features too, e.g.:

·  It offers “NoSPY” servers that are based in Romania. These servers offer all features of CyberGhost VPN, moreover, they provide more security options. The CyberGhost VPN team has set these up using premium hardware and the company enforces extensive security controls. This feature costs you $4.99 per month on average, however, CyberGhost VPN bills you yearly for this.

·  CyberGhost VPN offers dedicated IP addresses. Since dedicated IPs help avoid blacklisting, they can be advantageous to businesses. You pay $5 per month for dedicated IP addresses.CyberGhost VPN has robust security solutions. If you prioritize security, then CyberGhost VPN is a great choice.

What platforms can you use CyberGhost on?

You want a VPN that supports all kinds of devices you have, and CyberGhost VPN does that. It supports Windows, Mac, and Linux among desktops. Among mobile platforms, it supports Android and iOS. This VPN offers browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. CyberGhost VPN supports Amazon Fire Stick and Android TV. This VPN provides custom apps for all of these platforms.

You can connect 7 devices simultaneously with one CyberGhost VPN account. If you prioritize compatibility, then CyberGhost VPN is a robust choice.

Can you use streaming services with CyberGhost VPN?

Many VPN users buy a VPN to access geo-restricted streaming services like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, etc. However, these streaming services know that people use VPNs to bypass the restrictions. Netflix aggressively identifies and blocks VPNs, and the other streaming services do that too. As a result, several VPNs can’t unblock these geo-restricted streaming services. CyberGhost VPN succeeds in unblocking these streaming services.

You can access popular streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and HBO GO using this VPN. CyberGhost VPN also provides optimized servers for different streaming services. It offers good speed, therefore, you can expect a good experience while streaming. If you prioritize the access to geo-restricted streaming services, then CyberGhost VPN is an excellent choice.

Does CyberGhost allow torrenting?

Many VPN users buy a VPN since they want to access P2P/torrenting services. Some countries don’t allow P2P/torrenting. If you want to access such services in countries that allow them, you need to be careful so that you don’t break copyright laws. We recommend you familiarize yourself with applicable laws if you try to access P2P/torrenting services.

Even if you access such services legally, you face multiple challenges. Your ISP can throttle your connection, moreover, hackers can target you. Many Internet users access P2P/torrenting services via VPNs to get around such challenges.

CyberGhost VPN allows P2P/torrenting while protecting your privacy and security. This VPN offers good speed and it doesn’t impose bandwidth restrictions. CyberGhost VPN also offers servers optimized for P2P/torrenting, therefore, it’s a great choice if you want to access such services.

Can CyberGhost VPN bypass internet censorship?

On its website, CyberGhost VPN claims to bypass Internet censorship. It’s often successful in this, however, it can’t always do that.

We find that this VPN can’t bypass the kind of Internet censorship that countries like China impose. The Chinese government knows many people use VPNs to bypass the Internet censorship in that country, therefore, it aggressively blocks VPNs. CyberGhost VPN doesn’t work in China. If you want a VPN that works in China, you need to explore other market-leading VPNs.

What's the jurisdiction of CyberGhost?

A team of Romanian and German professionals runs CyberGhost VPN, however, its jurisdiction is the United Kingdom. Since the UK is part of the “14 Eyes” coalition of countries that conduct mass surveillance, the country isn’t the ideal jurisdiction for a privacy-focused VPN.

Privacy enthusiasts won’t like the jurisdiction of CyberGhost VPN, however, we don’t consider this to be a concern. We found that this VPN has an effective “no logs” policy. While it receives requests for information about its users from 3rd parties and law enforcement agencies, it can’t honor these requests. Since CyberGhost VPN doesn’t maintain any logs of its users’ Internet activities, it can’t provide any data. The jurisdiction of CyberGhost VPN doesn’t impact its users.

Does the service keep any logs?

CyberGhost VPN maintains a “no logs” policy. The company describes this policy on the privacy policy page on its website. CyberGhost VPN doesn’t log any of the following:

·  The browsing history of its users;

·  The Internet traffic destination of the CyberGhost VPN users;

·  The data content of Internet traffic;

·  The search preferences of its users;

·  The connection history of the CyberGhost VPN users including IP address, connection timestamp, and session duration.

This VPN has been operating since 2011, and it has maintained transparency. It receives requests for information about its users from 3rd parties including law enforcement organizations. CyberGhost VPN can’t cooperate with any of these requests since it doesn’t maintain any logs of its users’ Internet activities. The company regularly publishes transparency reports demonstrating this. We find that CyberGhost VPN has implemented a comprehensive “no logs” policy.

What encryption is used by CyberGhost?

CyberGhost VPN has implemented a comprehensive set of security solutions. This VPN supports OpenVPN, the most secure VPN protocol. CyberGhost VPN also supports other secure protocols like IKEv2 and L2TP

You can also use the WireGuard protocol, which is still under development. This protocol uses advanced cryptography, and it promises great speed and security. We recommend that you use it on an experimental basis.

With AES-256 encryption, CyberGhost VPN has implemented the most secure encryption solution you can get. This VPN provider prevents all IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks.

CyberGhost VPN provides an ad blocker moreover, it offers a malware blocker. Its “Automated HTTPS Redirect” feature forces its users to connect to the most secure version of every website they visit.

Even if the VPN connection drops suddenly, CyberGhost VPN keeps your sensitive information safe from hackers. Its “kill switch” feature blocks your Internet connection if the VPN disconnects suddenly.

You can use its Romania-based “NoSPY” servers at additional cost. CyberGhost VPN uses premium hardware and additional controls on these servers, therefore, they are even more secure.

CyberGhost VPN has excellent technical security features. During our review, we found that it’s a highly security-focused VPN.

How to use CyberGhost on Windows?

Installing CyberGhost on Windows is simple and easy. Their website automatically detected our os and offered to download the Windows installer. We accepted the terms and conditions, entered our email address and password, and the service was ready to use.

The application opens in a small window with the connection status, a connect button, and a small selection of servers.

But there is a lot more functionality hidden away in the left panel which can be opened by clicking on the yellow notch with the black arrows. Here is a list of all the countries with their distance, load, and amount of users currently using them, the countries can be further expanded to show all the available cities and servers. The servers can be filtered by what they are optimized like Torrenting, Streaming, and you can also build your custom Favorites list.

CyberGhost also makes good use of the system tray icon. Right-clicking on the icon displays all available countries, with submenus for torrenting, streaming, and your favorites. Users can connect to and disconnect from the service without having to open the main client interface.

Moving on to the heaps of options offered by CyberGhost categorized by Connection features, Smart rules, and generals settings.

Options in Connection features start with an adblocker service, followed by a Malicious site blocker. While testing, the adblocker seemed to work with mainstream websites and advertising forms, but it did struggle to block more advanced popup and banner ads. Some privacy features are also offered by CyberGhost, one of these is a blocker for online trackers, this aims to block sites trying to monitor your online behavior. The other privacy feature is a forced HTTPS redirect, which will ensure that the user is using the secured version of websites.

CyberGhost also features a Data Compression feature which helps users on mobile or metered networks. This option aims to reduce internet traffic by compressing images and other elements.

Under the Smart Rules menu, there are the more usual startup settings like starting the app on system startup and automatically connecting to a server. The service also offers Wi-Fi Protection which can automatically turn the VPN on or off on different Wi-Fi networks. There is also an option to exclude websites from the VPN tunnel.

CyberGhost provides some features that are not that usual, one of these is called App Protection which will automatically connect the VPN when a selected application is launched. The other feature starts a single application when the VPN connects.

In the General settings, the usual things like Language, appearance, and Kill-Switch settings. CyberGhost gives the option to select between OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols, both of these can work with TCP or UDP. The service features DNS and IPv6 leak protection.

Overall CyberGhost’s Windows application is a well-designed, feature-rich client. While testing we didn’t run into any bugs or glitches. The large number of settings can be overwhelming for new users but the service works without changing any of them. Some additional encryption settings would be nice to see.

Using CyberGhost on your smartphone

The smartphone versions of CyberGhost can be downloaded from the app stores. There are only minor differences between the Android and the IOS version of the software. Compared to the desktop version there are some features missing but it’s still a very feature-rich application.

When the application is first launched we get the chance to get a 7-day free trial. This trial version has some functionality locked but it’s still usable if you just want to try out the service. But don’t forget to cancel your subscription if you don't plan on using CyberGhost anymore or you will be automatically charged for the service.

The main screen of the application contains a large connect button with a small selection of countries next to it.

Under the All countries tab users can see all of the available countries listed alphabetically, but locations are easy to find using the search bar at the top of the screen. CyberGhost also provides a list of servers optimized for streaming and a customizable list of favorite locations.

CyberGhost’s mobile apps have no option to change the VPN protocols they use OpenVPN by default and there is no way to change that. There is an option to switch between TCP and UDP and to use a random port, the latter aims to help with getting a connection on networks where VPNs are blocked.

Privacy features are also available on mobile just like on Windows. These include a built-in ad blocker, protection against malicious websites, and prevention of online tracking.

CyberGhost also includes a Data compression feature, which aims to reduce network traffic by compressing pictures, and other data. This feature is especially useful when the device is connected to a mobile or metered network, as it can reduce costs by lessening the amounts of data transferred.

Split tunneling is also a very useful feature, it allows selected apps to tunnel outside of the VPN network fixing any errors caused by it.

Considering everything CyberGhost provides its users with a nice and easy to use smartphone client. It would be nice to see torrent optimized servers and encryption settings. During our testing, we didn’t run into any bugs or glitches with the application.

Dows CyberGhost work on Linux?

CyberGhost doesn’t have a graphical Linux client instead, they provide a text-based terminal application that is very hard to use even when compared to other terminal apps.

Installing the application isn’t the most pleasant experience. The installation is done from the terminal using the “sudo bash install.sh” command the installer automatically downloads all the dependencies and asks the user for their CyberGhost username and password.

Using the “sudo cyberghostvpn” command the program will display the list of commands that can be used with the app. Here is our first problem with the application; almost all of the commands have to be used with sudo before them. The other large difficulty that makes the user experience worse is the lack of explanation for the syntaxis of the commands.

All options have to be written with double dashes before them and if something is written with the wrong syntaxis or a parameter is missing, the application doesn’t tell the user what’s wrong with the given command instead, it just spits out several lines of error messages.

After googling the commands on how to actually use this nightmare of an application we successfully managed to get a connection. Here is the example command on how to connect to Germany “sudo cyberghostvpn --traffic --country-code DE --connect”. At least the application displays a message saying VPN connection established to confirm that something did happen.

When we want to connect to a specific server in a specific city the command looks like this: “sudo cyberghostvpn --traffic --country-code US --city Chicago --server chicago-s404-i01 --connect” this syntax is really hard to learn, and if we compare this to other provider’s text-based terminal apps CyberGhost will always get the second place.

The country codes can be listed using the “cyberghostvpn --traffic --country-code” command. The application also offers some settings like switching between OpenVPN and Wireguard, but we wouldn’t recommend using Wireguard as it has some security issues.

Overall CyberGhost’s Linux client is an absolute nightmare to use, and the documentation provided on their website isn’t too much help either. We would only recommend using this app if there is absolutely no other choice, it needs a complete rework to be more user friendly.

CyberGhost also supports Routers

We tested CyberGhost on a router running AsusWRT firmware but the service supports any router compatible with OpenVPN. There was no specific guide provided for our firmware but there were ones for routers running DDWRT, and Tomato.

Setting up a VPN connection on any router running AsusWRT is really simple even without any guides it wasn’t hard to do.

First, navigate to the VPN panel on the router’s configuration page then select add profile, give the connection a name, enter your name and password provided by CyberGhost on their website (please note that these aren’t your CyberGhost login credentials).

CyberGhost provides easy to use configuration files that have all the necessary configurations for the server of your choice, and there are settings for ad blocking, blocking of online trackers, and protection against malicious websites. Even though the configuration files are easy to use the files just have to be uploaded to the router, the other files containing information about certification authority, and the client key have to be copied manually.

Using a VPN on a router can make devices that don’t support VPN’s natively use a VPN network. The only drawbacks of using a virtual private network on your router are that it’s difficult to turn on and off and it’s hard to switch servers.

Setting up CyberGhost was a bit hard but doable experience, we didn’t run into any problems or noticed any bugs while testing the service.
