FrootVPN Review

[Presented by BestCloudBest.com]

Are you trying to protect your privacy and security when browsing the Internet? You need a “Virtual Private Network” (VPN). FrootVPN, a Seychelles-based VPN claims to provide privacy, security, speed, and access to geo-restricted content at a low price.

Many companies compete in the market for VPNs, and they claim to provide privacy and security. They also claim to offer speed, unblocking of geo-restricted content, access to P2P/torrenting, compatibility with all key platforms, and great support. The reality can vary though.

Does FrootVPN deliver what it promises? We have used the above-mentioned criteria to review this VPN. Read our review to find out if it meets your requirements and whether you should buy it.

Features offered by FrootVPN

You would want to buy a VPN that provides useful features. We now evaluate the features of FrootVPN.

Your privacy at Froot VPN

You value privacy while browsing the Internet, and that’s why you are buying a VPN. FrootVPN masks your IP address so that ISPs, governments, or other 3rd parties can’t associate your online activities to you. It encrypts your Internet traffic.

FrootVPN doesn’t log your online activities using its software. The company states that it doesn’t record user information, timestamp, bandwidth, IP address, DNS queries, or anything else about your online activities.

FrootVPN only requires your email address for the purpose of creating a user account. It collects no other personal information. The company prominently states on its website that it doesn’t share your information with any 3rd party.

You can pay for a FrootVPN subscription using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin, and Ripple. This provides you with a relatively anonymous way to pay for a FrootVPN subscription.

The jurisdiction of FrootVPN is Seychelles. This country isn’t a part of the “14 Eyes” coalition of countries that conduct mass surveillance. Seychelles is a privacy-friendly jurisdiction, and FrootVPN doesn’t have to comply with data retention laws.

We find that FrootVPN is a great choice if privacy is your priority. The company has an effective “no logs” policy.

Is your data secure with FrootVPN?

Since you are looking for a VPN, you likely prioritize security while browsing the Internet. VPNs that support secure protocols and offer strong encryption can secure your Internet traffic.

FrootVPN supports OpenVPN, which is the most secure VPN protocol. OpenVPN doesn’t have any known security vulnerabilities, therefore, we are happy to see that FrootVPN supports this protocol.

FrootVPN supports IKEv2 and L2TP protocols, which are secure too. We noticed that this VPN supports the PPTP protocol, however, we don’t recommend you use it. PPTP has security vulnerabilities. In any case, FrootVPN doesn’t require you to use it.

We noticed that FrootVPN supports WireGuard. It’s a relatively new VPN protocol that’s still under development. It uses advanced cryptography, and this promises higher security and speed. We recommend that you use WireGuard on an experimental basis.

FrootVPN secures your Internet traffic with 2048 bits encryption. It’s quite strong encryption. Most of the leading VPNs offers AES-256 encryption, which is the strongest in the market. While FrootVPN falls slightly short on this count, the company still offers strong encryption!

To put things in perspective, hackers with a regular computer will require 300 trillion years to break 2048-bit encryption. For AES-256, hackers will require 3x1051 years to break it. While AES-256 is stronger, 2048-bit encryption is strong enough!

FrootVPN prevents all IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. This VPN offers a “kill switch”, which blocks your Internet traffic if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly. This way, hackers can’t access your sensitive information even if the VPN connection terminates unexpectedly.

Note that for its servers in Sweden only, FrootVPN offers the “No NAT”, i.e., “No Network Address Translation” feature. This feature prevents all third-party interceptions.

Note 1: We wanted to know whether FrootVPN offers the “Perfect Forward Secrecy” feature. This feature provides added security since it regularly changes the encryption key. Even if a hacker manages to get hold of your encryption key, he/she won’t be able to use it for long. PFS will soon change the key. We had a chat with the customer support representative of FrootVPN, who mentioned that this VPN doesn’t offer PFS. However, we believe that FrootVPN might actually be offering PFS since it uses OpenVPN. OpenVPN is a very powerful VPN protocol and it supports PFS by default. We would like FrootVPN to clarify on its website whether it actually offers PFS.

Note 2: FrootVPN doesn’t offer an ad or malware blocker.

In our review, we found that FrootVPN has implemented an effective set of security solutions. We would like this VPN to offer an ad/malware blocker and clarify whether it offers PFS. Having said that, we consider FrootVPN a good choice if you prioritize security.

Where are the servers of FrootVPN located?

You want a VPN that’s fast. VPNs with enough servers in all key geographies stand the best chance to provide good speed. FrootVPN has over 180 servers in 43 locations across 32 countries.

Its server locations cover the following geographies and countries:

·  North America: USA, Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica;

·  Europe: UK, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey;

·  Russia;

·  Oceania: Australia and New Zealand;

·  Asia: Hong Kong, India, Japan, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea;

·  Latin America: Brazil and Argentina.

FrootVPN doesn’t have a presence in Africa.

FrootVPN invests in high-quality infrastructure. They connect their servers to 10 Gbps network infrastructure and guarantees 99.99% uptime.

FrootVPN has fewer servers than market-leading VPNs. In continents like Asia and Latin America, it has a limited presence. While it offers reasonable speed, users can experience a drop in speed depending on where they reside. If you want a very fast VPN, then you should explore other leading VPNs.

What platforms can you use FrootVPN on?

You want a VPN that you can use with all your devices. We now examine the compatibility aspect of FrootVPN.

This VPN supports all key platforms. You can use it with desktops like Windows, Mac, and Linux. Among mobile platforms, you can use FrootVPN with Android and iOS. This VPN allows 5 simultaneous connections.

FrootVPN offers a custom app that you can use on your Windows desktop. For all other platforms, you need to use its guides to configure FrootVPN manually. FrootVPN offers guides for setting up various protocols like IKEv2, L2TP, etc.

Using these guides, you can configure FrootVPN on some other platforms like Chromebook, Synology “Network Attached Storage” (NAS) devices and routers. You can configure this VPN on any router that supports the DD-WRT firmware.

We are happy with the fact that FrootVPN supports a wide range of platforms including all key platforms. However, this VPN provides a custom app for Windows only. Most of the leading VPNs in the market offer custom apps for all key platforms. That helps users that aren’t tech-savvy since they don’t need to manually configure a VPN.

Although FrootVPN offers useful guides, that’s not quite the same as offering a custom app. Having said that, setting up OpenVPN is easy enough if you have access to a helpful guide.

If you don’t mind a bit of effort to configure a VPN manually with the help of useful guides, then FrootVPN will work fine for you. However, if you want to convenience of a custom app for all the key devices you have, then you should explore a market-leading VPN.

Unblocking streaming services with the help of FrootVPN

FrootVPN prominently claims on its website that it unblocks geo-restricted streaming services like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, etc. However, we find that it can’t do so. To be fair, FrootVPN isn’t alone in this! Geo-restricted streaming services like Netflix know that people use VPNs to access them and they aggressively block VPNs.

If you want a VPN that can consistently unblock Netflix and similar geo-restricted streaming services, then you should explore a market-leading VPN.

Does FrootVPN allow torrenting?

Are you planning to buy a VPN to access P2P/torrenting services securely? We recommend that you check the laws. Some countries don’t allow P2P/torrenting, moreover, you could face copyright infringement issues even in countries that allow it.

Assuming you plan to access P2P/torrenting services legally, you will typically face several challenges. Cyber-attackers target P2P/torrenting users frequently. Your ISP will throttle your Internet connection as soon as it finds out that you are accessing a P2P/torrenting service. Many people use a VPN to get around these challenges.

FrootVPN allows P2P/torrenting and you can access these services securely using this VPN. This provider doesn’t impose any bandwidth restrictions. If you prioritize the access to P2P/torrenting services, then FrootVPN is an excellent choice.

How much does FrootVPN cost?

You want a VPN that’s reasonably-priced. FrootVPN offers 3 pricing plans, and each of these plans includes all of its features. These plans are as follows:

·  Monthly: This plan costs you $14.99 per month;

·  3-months: You pay $11.97 once in 3 months, which translates to $3.99 per month;

·  Yearly: FrootVPN bills you for $35.88 every year, therefore, your average monthly cost is $2.99.

FrootVPN offers sufficient flexibility concerning the payment method. You can pay using popular credit cards like Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. FrootVPN accepts PayPal and Perfect Money. You can pay using popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ether, Ripple, etc., which offer relative anonymity.

FrootVPN provides a secure way to pay. Your personal information and payment transactions are secure with this VPN.

This VPN doesn’t offer any free trial. FrootVPN offers a 30-days money-back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied with its products/services. You need to inform its customer support team via email or live chat within 30 days of purchase if you need a refund.

We find that FrootVPN is quite cheap. If the price is a key decision-making factor for you, then go for FrootVPN.

Thanks to a few intuitive steps, you can buy a FrootVPN subscription easily. You can easily install the Windows app and use it. FrootVPN doesn’t offer a custom app for the other platforms. Since custom apps help users that aren’t tech-savvy, FrootVPN does lag behind its competitors on this count.

The company offers useful guides to configure its VPN manually on your device. Configuring OpenVPN is easy enough if you have a helpful guide. Given this, we consider FrootVPN sufficiently user-friendly.

About the customer service of FrootVPN

You would surely want good customer support from a VPN provider. If a VPN offers very easy-to-use custom apps for all key platforms, then you will need to contact its customer support team for fewer times. Since FrootVPN doesn’t offer custom apps for platforms other than Windows, you will likely need to contact its support team a few times. As a result, the importance of customer support increases in cases of VPNs like FrootVPN.

FrootVPN has a comprehensive “Support” page on its website. The company provides detailed guides for all platforms here. You will find guides for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, etc. FrootVPN also offers guides each protocol that it supports for a given platform.

Take the example of Windows. FrootVPN offers a guide for its custom app. It also offers guides for protocols like OpenVPN, L2TP, and IKEv2. The guide for OpenVPN includes the 3rd party OpenVPN GUI.

Take another example, this time for Mac. FrootVPN doesn’t offer a custom app for Mac. It provides guides for OpenVPN using the Tunnelblick app. It also provides guides for protocols like L2TP, IKEv1, IKEv2, and WireGuard.

We found that the guides offered by FrootVPN are helpful. Users should be able to configure VPN connections easily with them.

FrootVPN has a searchable knowledgebase, which is quite comprehensive. This provider offers an FAQ section on its support page, which covers both technical and other questions.

You can reach the customer support team of FrootVPN by live chat. It’s not a 24x7 live chat, however, we were able to get answers to our questions during the weekend. You can open a support ticket or email the customer support team.

FrootVPN has a knowledgeable, prompt, and professional customer support team. We found that its customer support capabilities are quite impressive!

What's the jurisdiction of FrootVPN?

The jurisdiction of FrootVPN is Seychelles. Since this country isn’t a part of the “14 Eyes” coalition of countries that conduct mass surveillance, Seychelles is the ideal jurisdiction for privacy-focused VPNs. FrootVPN doesn’t need to comply with any data retention laws.

Does FrootVPN keep any logs of your activity?

FrootVPN doesn’t keep any logs of your online activities. The company goes on to explicitly state that it doesn’t track any information about what its users do on the Internet using its software. It doesn’t track timestamps, bandwidth, IP addresses, DNS queries, etc. FrootVPN has implemented an effective and clear “no logs” policy.

About the technical security at FrootVPN

FrootVPN supports OpenVPN, and we are very happy to see that. OpenVPN is the most secure VPN protocol. At the time of writing this review, this protocol doesn’t have any known security vulnerabilities.

FrootVPN also supports IKEv2 and L2TP, which are secure protocols too. We saw that FrootVPN supports PPTP, however, we don’t recommend you use it. This protocol has security vulnerabilities. In any case, FrootVPN doesn’t require you to use PPTP. We recommend that you use OpenVPN.

FrootVPN also supports WireGuard, a promising VPN protocol is still under development. This protocol promises better speed and security. You can use this on an experimental basis.

Encryption is important since it secures your Internet traffic. FrootVPN uses 2048 bit encryption. This encryption is strong, however, it’s not as strong as AES-256. The difference in strength between AES-256 and 2048 bits doesn’t make a material difference to a VPN user though. Both of them secure your sensitive data adequately.

FrootVPN guards against all IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. This VPN offers a “kill switch” that will block your Internet connection if the VPN connection terminates suddenly. This prevents cybercriminals from accessing your sensitive information even if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly.

FrootVPN doesn’t offer an ad/malware blocker. Also, as we have explained, we would like FrootVPN to clarify whether it offers the “Perfect Forward Secrecy” (PFS) features.
