The application is very well made and has an outstanding amount of features. During the testing, we didn’t run into any bugs and the application passed all security tests. Using AirVPN on Android

AirVPN’s Android app follows the same design scheme as the desktop edition Compared to other VPN applications AirVPN doesn’t follow the modern trends, it’s not as minimalistic as most VPNs.

Logging in to the app is done on the main screen, and there is no way to register a new account directly from the application, it has to be done through the website. Most of the time the mobile applications are way more limited in features than their desktop counterparts while this is partially true for AirVPN. There is still a lot of functionality built into the app.

The android application of AirVPN can be downloaded from two different sources either from the GooglePlay store or directly from the website. The simple way of installing the program is through GooglePlay Store. Getting the app from the website is only recommended for advanced users.

Just like in the Windows app users can take advantage of the automatic server selection, or they can select a server from the long list of servers. The server list has all the information and functionality that anyone would ever want and it includes a search bar. Each server has an indicator for latency, load, maximum speed, and the number of users currently using it.

The wide range of settings is a great selling point of AirVPN. There are options to change protocols, port settings, IP settings, the encryption algorithm, data compression, kill switch settings, there is also an application filter that allows applications to bypass the VPN network and even more advanced settings.

Overall AirVPN is a very feature-rich and customizable service and because of all the options and possible settings, it can be overwhelming for someone who has no experience with VPN services. During our testing, we detected no IP/DNS leaks, and we didn’t run into any bugs or glitches.

Setting up AirVPN on Linux

AirVPN provides a graphical client for Linux which is really nice to see, it’s not often that providers take the extra inconvenience of developing and maintaining a visual client for Linux.

Installing the program is really simple. All you have to do is download the “.deb” installer from the website of AirVPN and run it. On the download page, users can easily find and download the version that’s right for them. AirVPN supports most Linux distros, and it has a Graphical UI and a Command-line version.

Once the installation is completed the application can be accessed by clicking the AirVPN shortcut. Just like on all other platforms, the program opens with its main menu screen and every part of it can be accessed, except for the connect button without logging in.

The client has all the same functionality as its Windows counterpart. 

After entering your log-in credentials you can begin using the service by selecting a server from the server list menu and clicking the large connect button. The app can automatically select a server for you.

Just like in the Windows version there are a lot of settings that the users can fiddle around with. AirVPN only supports OpenVPN but it does support several different ports and options to switch between UDP and TCP.

AirVPN does provide a Kill Switch which blocks all internet traffic if the VPN disconnects, it has the option to use Lower MTUs (Maximum Transmission Units) it aims to improve connection reliability by lowering the size of the packets sent on the network.

Thanks to the graphical interface AirVPN’s Linux client is really simple to use. It’s really nice to see when providers take the extra effort and make a feature rich and easy to use graphical client for Linux. AirVPN has more options than 90% of the other VPN service providers. The only feature that we missed during our testing, was the VPN ad/malware blocking. During our testing, the software showed no bugs and it passed the leak tests.

Is your router compatible with AirVPN?

We tested AirVPN on a router running AsusWRT firmware but the service supports any router compatible with OpenVPN AirVPN also provides a very useful configuration generator.

Setting up a VPN connection on any router running AsusWRT is really simple, and AirVPN’s website has a really good tutorial for people who are new to using VPNs on routers.

First, navigate to the VPN panel on your router’s configuration page here select add profile, give the connection a name of your liking, leave username and password empty.

AirVPN provides easy to use configuration files that have all the necessary configurations for the server of your choice, these config files can be created on AirVPN’s download page. There is no need to import the CA file manually.

Ivacy used on a router is a good way to use their service, but it would be nice if they added servers with ad blocking capabilities. While using their service we didn’t notice any connection or speed problems, but this might change according to your region and server choice.

Setting up AirVPN was a really pleasant experience, and we didn’t run into any problems or noticed any bugs while testing the service, and it also passed all of our security tests.

Connection speeds while using AirVPN

There are many factors that you have to consider before you choose a VPN, and speed is definitely one of those factors. Certain speed tests were made, and here are the results of the tests. 

Before, a VPN connection was used, the average download speed was 12.18 Mbps. Meanwhile, the upload speed was 0.79 Mbps. Then, an AirVPN UK server was put to the test. The average download speed of a UK server was 5.92 Mbps, and the average upload speed was 0.55 Mbps.
